Waiting

Control from ambulance 14, in position.
It is 9:00 on a Sunday morning, it has been a long day already, up at 05:30 to shower, breakfast, do VDI, and drive the 40 minutes for the ambulance briefing, then the same again to get to our position. Then........nothing, except for the creeping onset of worry reaching out with it's dead grey hand. It was here that there were four fatalities a couple of years back, what will I do if history repeats? The banter with my cremate gets more and more forced. Why do we do this? After an hour or so the front runners come through, probably another three quarters of an hour till the solids really interface with the air conditioning, then, Ambulance 14 we have a job for you. We set off down the road, still waiting to find out what the job is as details are sparse. Once we get on scene I remember why we do this and the rest of the day goes in a blur.
